The Objective of the Tokyo University Amgen Scholarship Program
This program’s objective is to provide undergraduate students from various countries, including a few from Japan, who are committed and determined to or who are considering a career in biology or relevant sciences and looking to continue to graduate studies, with 8 weeks of biomedical research experience in the translational and basic sciences.
Amgen Scholars Eligibility
To be considered for this program and apply, the applicants need to meet the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program requirements.
The applicants of the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program have to be undergraduate students who:
- Are attending universities or colleges across the Asia region* that confer a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and
- Have completed their first year of undergraduate study (at the minimum) at the time the program starts, and
- Are not graduating before the program starts, and will resume their undergraduate study program for at least one semester or one quarter after the summer program (Amgen Scholars Program) ends.
The applicants of this program must also:
- Possess a strong academic record (academic performance), and
- Possess a good working knowledge of the English language, shown through a minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 72.
- Have an IELTS overall band score of 5.5, TOEIC score of 1095, Cambridge English FCE, TOEIC L&R score of 785, or TOEIC S&W score of 310, if the applicants are not native English speakers or if English is not their first language, and
- Have their interest in pursuing a PhD degree

Financial Benefits Under the Tokyo University Amgen Scholarship Program
- Selected candidates will be offered accommodation near Hongo Campus. Some labs are not located in Hongo, thus, commuting by train could be required.
- A stipend of JPY 270,000. These can be used for food and any kind of personal trips during students’ stay in Japan.
- Airfare – economy class airfare will be offered to Tokyo, or round-trip train tickets for domestic candidates.
- Successful students are required to arrange their own health and travel insurance.
- Travel allowances will be offered to students who commute to campuses other than Hongo and Yayoi.
