As far as the Van Vleet Memorial Doctoral Award is concerned, the opportunity is made possible by the generosity of the Van Vleet Foundation (established in 1964) by the late McKay Van Vleet, Memphis Civic Leader and Business Executive. The gift to The University of Memphis was made possible by McKay Van Vleet’s wife, Harriet Smith Van Vleet. These awards have been created and designed to assist a few (certain) departments to attract exceptional doctoral students.

Selection Process of Van Vleet Memorial Doctoral Award
There is a selection procedure – department chairs will be asked to nominate potential candidates by submitting a Nomination Form to the Dean of the Graduate School. Candidates are required to include all required documentation. It should be noted that photocopies of all documentation are requested – not originals. On the part of department chairs, they need to include a cover memo ranking the applicants.
The selection of the candidates will be done by a committee composed of one representative from each eligible department.
Funding for the University of Memphis Van Vleet Memorial Doctoral Award
Those who are successful in getting the award will receive the scholarship for four years (as it is renewable) amounting to $16,000. This amount will be offered per year. $17,000 will be offered for international students.
Condition: Since the award is renewable, to continue getting it, each year the recipients have to maintain a 3.25 CGPA.

The last submission date for the award application is 14th February 2025. It is advised to apply before time.
How to Apply for the University of Memphis Van Vleet Memorial Doctoral Award
Chairs will be informed about the successful candidates in March, and departments will be asked to secure a commitment to attend the University of Memphis from the student recipient by March 14th, if possible. It also needs to be noted that if there is a national response date for the given discipline, the Department Chair should inform the Dean of the Graduate School and that the department’s recipients will not need to make a commitment until the national response date.
