As far as this organization is concerned, it invests in research to enhance education, widely conceived. It has identified a critical need for novel, methodologically and disciplinary diverse, large-scale research projects in order to transform education systems for equity.

The foundation believes strongly that ambitious research projects have to start with the problems, challenges, and opportunities in education systems. To stimulate research that focuses on/addresses this need, The Spencer Foundation is seeking to provide scholars and collaborators with the time, resources, space, and support to make a plan for a large-scale study program of research.

The Spencer Foundation’s Vision Grants program provides funding for the collaborative planning of unique, methodologically diverse, interdisciplinary research done on education that contributes to transforming the systems of education for equity. As far as the vision grants are concerned, they are research planning grants to bring together a team for a period of 6 to 12 months to develop large-scale, ambitious research projects collaboratively focused on transforming education systems toward wider equity.

Eligibility Criteria for the Spencer Foundation Grants

To be eligible for this opportunity, you need to meet the eligibility requirements. Proposals for this grant program have to be for planning research projects that study education and/or learning widely conceived though they will include scholars and partners in other fields and sectors. It should be noted that Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-PIs applying for this grant (vision grant) need to possess appropriate experience or have earned/obtained a doctorate in an academic discipline or terminal degree in a professional area/field.

Though graduate students could be part of the research team, they might not be named the PI or Co-PI on the proposal.

It must also be noted that the PI has to be affiliated with a non-profit organization or public/governmental institution which shows its willingness (that is willing) to serve as the administering organization provided that the grant is conferred.

The foundation does not offer grants directly to individuals. Examples consist of universities, non-profit private or public colleges, research facilities, school districts, as well as other non-profit organizations with a 501(c)(3) determination from the IRS (or its equivalent non-profit status provided that the organization is outside of America/the United States).

For Spencer Foundation Vision Grants, PIs and Co-PIs could apply if they possess another active research grant from the Spencer Foundation or if their other Spencer Foundation grant proposal is in review.

Proposals are accepted from the United States or internationally and the proposals have to be submitted in English. The budgets have to be proposed in U.S. dollars.

Note: There will be an option to apply for a transformative research grant (with awards to do the planned research projects – budgets up to $3.5M) for all awarded vision grantees.

Funding for the Spencer Foundation Vision Grants 

The grants are worth $75,000 total and two cycles of this vision grant program will be conducted per year.

Deadline for Application Submission

The application period is open from 5th June 2024. The last date for intent to apply form is 14th August 2024. The final proposal deadline is 17th September 2024.
