Tasks and Responsibilities for the PhD Position at the University of Groningen 

  • To carry out research tasks of RECODE-MLG as the supervisor directs and to co-produce connected deliverables.
  • To present research outcomes (results) at the project along with external conferences and workshops and to publish academic articles.
  • To assist the supervisor in communication, organizational, and dissemination activities relevant to RECODE-MLG.
  • To conduct a total of up to 0.2 FTE teaching during the 2nd and 3rd year of appointment.

Eligibility Requirements (Qualifications of the Candidate)

  • The applicant should have a (Research) Master’s degree in Politics (any subfield), Urban Studies, European Studies, or another related discipline.
  • The applicants should have a demonstrable interest in the research themes of the PhD and more generally, the RECODE-MLG project.
  • The candidate should possess outstanding research dexterities (skills) for example by the applicant’s Master’s thesis.
  • English proficiency is required that means the applicant should have good command of English. If the candidate has proficiency in other European languages, it will be considered a plus.
  • Independent work ability is required.
  • The candidate must have strong interest in interdisciplinary dialogue and collaborative research.

Note: The employment will be full-time for a period of three years and it will be under the PhD conditions of the collective labor agreement (CAO) of Dutch Universities.

Financial Benefits

The successful candidate will be offered the following benefits.

  • Based on a full-time position, the successful candidate will receive a salary of € 2,770 gross per month in the first year up to a maximum of € 3,377 gross per month in the final year.
  • There will be an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance.
  • The successful candidate will also receive a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income.
  • It will be a temporary 1.0 FTE appointment for a particular period of 3 years. First, the candidate will be appointed for 12 months. After 6 months, an assessment will be done of the candidate’s progress and results of the PhD project to decide if the employment will be continued.
  • The candidate should be willing to relocate and live in the Netherlands.
  • The candidate will be offered an excellent work-life balance.
  • The PhD candidate will conduct up to 0.2 FTE teaching spread over the 2nd and 3rd year of their appointment.

Note: The PhD Position will start on 1st January 2025. The university will allow three months from selection in case of visa applications.
