Applicants must have obtained outstanding study results in their last (previous) education, this being related to the Master’s programme for which they are applying. The student should be amongst the top 10% of graduates in his/her previous study programme.
Applicants must be the citizens of non-EEA/non-EFTA* countries and could not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (Studiefinanciering) – with the exception of students/applicants applying for the LLM Advanced Studies programmes or the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, for which there are no nationality restrictions in place.
*All EU (European Union) countries plus Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.
Financial Benefits

The scholarship will be provided for the duration of the study programme. There are 3 available levels of awards namely
- € 10,000 of the tuition fee
- € 15,000 of the tuition fee
- Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee
Note: It should be noted that tThe LExS is not a full scholarship. As for as the non-EEA LExS recipients are concerned, they still have to submit ‘proof of sufficient funds’ for their student visa/residence permit application.
Deadline for Applications
The Leiden university excellence scholarship LExS deadline is 1st February for the programmes starting in September and 1st October for the programmes starting in February.
