Honjo International Scholarship Foundation Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for application (to apply), interested candidates are required to meet the following eligibility standards.

Applicants must be non-Japanese (must be foreign students).
The candidates have to be enrolled as of April 2025 or presently applying for the academic program commencing from April 2025 at a graduate school in Japan. It is worth noting that those applicants who are already enrolled and those who are not enrolled yet (including those who are presently employed with jobs at the time of application for the program) are both considered eligible to apply for this scholarship scheme provided that they are going to be enrolled in April 2025. Those candidates who are set to enter graduate schools in the fall of 2025 can apply for the Spring scholarship program.
In principle, those applicants/students enrolling in a professional graduate school are not eligible to apply. Therefore, a student submitting a research plan is eligible to apply for the scholarship.
The duration of enrolment until graduation has to be longer than one year (12 months).
Those applying for the PhD program have to begin the PhD degree by the age of 35 (to be eligible).
The applicants who are applying for the master’s degree must begin the master’s program by the age of 30 (no exceptions in this regard).
The students must show their strong commitment to serving their home country as a future career plan.
Applicants who are applying for the scholarship need to have a comprehensive understanding of international friendship and goodwill, participate in the network as an alumni member, and attend events conducted by the foundation.
The students have to be proficient in basic conversation in Japanese since the interviews will be conducted in the same language (Japanese), there will be no exceptions.

Period and Scholarship Amount

Under the Honjo International Foundation scholarship for international students, the scholarship amount will be provided to successful candidates every month throughout the minimum period required to obtain the degree. The amount may vary depending on the length of the study program.

¥230,000 per month for 1 to 2 years degree
¥210,000 per month for 3 years degree
¥180,000 per month for 4 to 5 years degree
