The Goethe University Frankfurt has launched the GRADE Completion Scholarships, under which the applications are now open. As far as the Goethe Research Academy for Early Career Researchers (GRADE) is concerned, it is the central platform available for all early career researchers at Goethe University. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Stiftung zur Förderung der internationalen wissenschaftlichen Beziehungen der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität sponsor the GRADE Completion Scholarships in Germany that supports international doctoral candidates who are in the final stages of their doctoral thesis at none other than the most popular and renowned Goethe University.
Details and Selection Criteria for the GRADE Completion Scholarships in Germany
GRADE offers six completion scholarships to overseas (international) doctoral students of Goethe University Frankfurt. The selection of the candidates will primarily be based on the candidates’ scientific excellence according to the regulations of DAAD. In case the applications happen to be comparable in terms of candidates’ academic track record, financial situation and social aspects can be considered in addition.

Thus, the applicants must include references to all materials, activities, and certificates (conference contributions, publications, other presentations, grades, honors and awards, scholarships) that distinguish them as young exceptional researchers laced with very good academic performance.
The GRADE Completion Scholarships Requirements (Eligibility)
- The applicants must have admission as doctoral candidates at Goethe University Frankfurt
- Doctoral thesis should be submitted in 2025, or it can be submitted in early 2026 as expected
- German citizens are not eligible, only international applicants are eligible to apply
- University entrance qualification should have been acquired outside of Germany
Financial Coverage Under the GRADE Completion Scholarships in Germany
Financial coverage is available for the completion scholarships for international candidates. The GRADE Completion Scholarship is offered to support international doctoral students who are in the final stages of their doctoral thesis – the completion needs to be done in 2025 or early 2026.
- Those who are chosen will receive 1000 Euros monthly for a 3-month duration – the amount will be paid out from July 2025. This call for applications is now open to all international (non-German) doctoral students of Goethe University Frankfurt.
- Scholarship recipients are not allowed to have a full-time or substantial employment either at Goethe University or with another employer during the scholarship period or another scholarship for the same purpose. It must be noted that they can go for a small-scale employment (that is possible) provided that the purpose and the content of the job (employment) should clearly be different from the scholarship.

Closing Date for Applications
The last submission date for the GRADE Completion Scholarships in Germany is 13th April 2025. The university will try to process the applications as early as possible. The selection will be done by the GRADE Board, hence, it could nonetheless take four to five weeks until a final decision is out.
Application Procedure for the GRADE Completion Scholarships in Germany
The following documents are required to be submitted till the deadline.
- Application form (completed)
- Resume or CV plus a copy of the last academic degree with grades
- Faculty letter is required as a PhD candidate at Goethe University Frankfurt
- The dissertation project needs to be introduced in a short essay of two DIN A4 pages maximum, it must also include a time schedule. On the part of the applicants, they are required to demonstrate the feasibility of the completion of their thesis in the year 2025 or early 2026
- A letter of recommendation is also required that needs to be issued by the main supervisor who comments on the dissertation project’s progress and confirms the suggested timeline, making sure that the thesis submission will be done in 2025 or early 2026.
